Our Opportunities
The Government and Major Event Security Branch is looking for people interested in working in the areas of national security and/or protective security, who are self-driven, organised and enjoy working in a rapidly evolving environment.
At the APS 6 level, our Security Advisors are responsible in supporting the executive level team in driving key priorities with the coordination of national security for declared Special Events. The roles involve assisting with the development and coordination of complex project activities, including the preparation and coordination of secretariat support for multi-agency security working groups, developing and maintaining event specific strategic and project documentation, including national security risk assessments, strategic security plans and supporting the development of complex briefs, committee papers, Cabinet and Ministerial papers and correspondences.
At the APS 5 level, our Project Officers are responsible for supporting the delivering of key priorities across the Branch. The roles involve developing and coordinating project specific activities, which includes, but not limited to, the coordination and providing secretariat support for multi-agency security working groups, assisting and maintaining strategic and project specific documentation, including assisting with the development of security risk assessments and supporting briefs, committee papers, Cabinet and Ministerial papers and correspondences.

Physical Security Section
- assist in the development of threat-based physical security risk assessments, in consultation with other Australian Government agencies
- assist in the management, coordination and implementation of physical security infrastructure at High Office Holders’ offices and residences, Official Establishments, and foreign diplomatic missions around Australia
- report development and writing, including physical security risk assessment reports, briefs to managers, and correspondence with stakeholders
- undertake project management, including secretariat support for committees
- develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders, including Australian Government agencies and industry service providers
- undertaking procurement activities in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules and contract management requirements
- remain flexible and adaptable to the changing priorities of branch, division and the Australian Government
- promote and nurture an inclusive and collaborative work environment across the branch and wider department.
Major Events Security Section
- provide secretariat support for the multi-agency Security Working Groups established for the annual Anzac Commemorative Services in France and Turkey and upcoming major events in Australia
- maintain close liaison with Australian Government agencies including the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of Defence, and other agencies/departments as required
- assist in the development of strategic security plans, security risk assessments and risk treatment plans as well as other major-event specific plans
- assist in the development of complex briefs, committee papers, Cabinet and Ministerial papers and correspondence within time frames as required.
As a Security Advisor or Project Officer you will also be required to demonstrate:
- effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft a wide range of documentation
- sound understanding of risk management principles and policies, including project or program management
- ability to problem solve using judgement when managing risk
- ability to provide accurate, consistent, timely and appropriate advice to our executive, clients and stakeholders
- ability to identify, analyse and synthesise data from a variety of sources
- the ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities under tight timelines
- demonstrated information management skills.
It is desirable (but not essential) for applicants to hold risk management and/or security risk management and/or project management training qualifications, or the ability to undertake training in these areas.
