Director, External Innovation & Research Alliances, China [China]


 

Summary:

This position reports to the Head of Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD) China, and is also expected to be part of the global External Innovation team. This position will be primarily based out of Suzhou or Shanghai or Beijing, P. R. China and is expected to be working onsite with China VMRD at Suzhou or Beijing.

Theincumbentwillneedtobeaself-starteranddeliveron the strategic objectives for VMRD China, as well as build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners across China and beyond. The position would be primarily research alliancefocused, but may include a component of procurement, outsourcing and vendor management activities forVMRD.The position is expected to:

(1) maintain existing partnerships and create new networks of potential partners; (2) scout and identify opportunities to proactively fill the gap in the China VMRD pipelines and portfolio;

(3) coordinate alliances and collaborations;

(4) effectively communicate anticipated investments, commitments, and deliverables from the alliances, and update all alliance information to the centralized alliance database for VMRD.

This will require working with internal colleagues and external networks to multiply the "outreach" into institutes, universities, and companies, developing and managing relationships with key external collaborators.

Total travel will likely be approximately 30-50%.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Ideation: Engage with China VMRD stakeholders for proactive identification of the gaps in the capabilities, resources, technologies, or assets that may be needed from external sources.
  • Outreach & Networking: Create a working network of the professionally accessible & culturally fit service providers and technology partners in China, which includes but not limited to - CROs, CMOs, Start-ups, Academia, Private companies, and Government institutes.
  • Scouting & Evaluation: Anticipation, identification,triage, assessment and evaluation of opportunities (like resources, capabilities, services, substrates, technologies, disease models, research information or expertise) that delivers critical ‘needs’ for the projects in the China VMRD portfolio.
  • Transaction: Contract drafting and financial valuation modeling for the deal, due diligence, negotiations, and execution of the transaction in line with the Zoetis Governance processes.
  • Alliance Management: Post transaction management of the relationship with the partner and follow-ups to ensure that the investments, commitments, and deliverables from the alliances are progressing as agreed.
  • Communication: Effective liaising and proactive engagement with VMRD research project teams, China commercial team, Global Commercial Development, Legal, Finance, Procurement and Business Development will be vital.

The role may also support global portfolio needs.


Qualifications & Experience:

Thesuccessfulapplicantmusthave:

  • PhDin Science, Pharma or Life Sciences field.
  • Atleast5years of hands-on transactionalexperience in developing and managing solid business/ research alliance relationshipswithindustryandacademia;anddraftingandnegotiatingtechnology-based agreements in Pharmaceutical or Life Science space.
  • Strong verbal as well as written proficiency in Mandarin & English language are the must.
  • Demonstratedandworkingknowledgeofintellectualpropertyconcernsinresearch/business alliances.
  • Stronginter-cultural & intra-cultural personalskillstoforgebusinessrelationshipswithoutsideorganizationsand across internal partners.
  • Working understandingofbusiness / dealvaluation, financial modeling, projectmanagement,VMRD costs and timelines.
  • Strongattentiontodetailsanda“finisher”mentality.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with at least 3 years of experience, managing inter-functional teams in a matrix organisation environment.
  • Citizenship or work permit to work in China.

The following competencies / accomplishments would be an added advantage:

  • A degree in Animal Health may be an added advantage.
  • Broad scientific knowledge and understanding in animal health research, development, and veterinary products.
  • At least 3 years of VC or PE firm experience, managing small to mid-sized investment.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
